SCHOOL BACKGROUND

Established in 1987

Cedar high was established in 1987 in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain.
Art was taught as a subject, but was phased out due to rationalisation.
Despite this hiccup, Art and Culture continued to be a strong department of the school.

Athlone High School was founded in 1947. As the apartheid regime moved people into racially segregated areas, schools such as Athlone High was created to cater for these displaced people. It was the first High School on the Cape Flats. The school has an extremely rich history and has provided a strong, diverse education for many of our leaders of today. The Cabinet minister Pallo Jordan, Wilmot James, MP and doctor the actress Denise Williams and many others had their schooling at Athlone High.

The first principal was the famous Afrikaans poet Mr S V Peterson, who started the school in 1947. He was succeeded by Bill Williams and thereafter Ronnie De Kock. The present principal is Howard Mackrill.

The school presently has 770 students who are mainly drawn from areas such as Athlone, which includes areas such as Kewtown, Bridgetown, Heideveld and Manenberg. We also cater for the students from the townships such as Gugulethu , Khayelitsha and Langa. The school thus serve a diverse population and has continued to serve the disadvantaged communities of Cape Town. Most of our student come from areas with high unemployment, extremely poor socio –economic conditions with high levels of crime. The teaching staff consists of 24 teachers, two administrative secretaries and 3 cleaners.

Despite those circumstances we at Athlone High School have been able to maintain high levels of academic success. The school has averaged an over 80% pass rate in the Grade 12 exams over the last 10 years. This pass rate has been well above the national average which is about 65%. We believe that all students need a good quality education, and we strive to fulfil these goals, in an extremely under resourced system.

The school has an academic bias offering the following subjects up to Grade 12 level. English Afrikaans, Physical Science, Life Science, History, Geography, Accounting and Business Studies.

The school celebrated its 60th Anniversary in the year 2007. We are exceptionally proud of the contribution the school has made not only to the community but the broader South African society.
